Iseltwald in Switzerland is one of those villages where you wonder beforehand: is it really that special, or has it mainly become famous because of social media? We had that feeling here as well. You see beautiful photos of the village beside Lake Brienz, but also lots of people who mainly come for one famous pier.
We visited Iseltwald on our final day in the Jungfrau region. We drove there from our beautiful apartment near Interlaken and decided to include the village as a short stop. We simply wanted to see what everyone was talking about.
And honestly, Iseltwald is beautiful. The lake is a wonderful shade of blue, the surrounding mountains look impressive and the village certainly has charm. But it is also a place where the hype is clearly noticeable. Whether Iseltwald is worth visiting for you therefore depends quite a lot on what you expect.

Where is Iseltwald?
Iseltwald is located on the southern shore of Lake Brienz, near Interlaken. The village sits beautifully between the lake and the mountains, making it a pleasant photo stop, especially in clear weather.
We drove there from the Interlaken area. We stayed at Kiwi Chalet – Mountain Views & Cozy NZ Vibes in Goldswil. It was a fun and slightly different place to stay, with a small reference to New Zealand. Goldswil is a convenient base for Interlaken, Lake Brienz and stops such as Iseltwald.
From Lauterbrunnen, it takes around 20 to 30 minutes to drive to Iseltwald, depending on traffic and exactly where you start. From Interlaken, the journey is even shorter. This makes the village easy to combine with other places in the region.
Arriving in Iseltwald
You drive towards Iseltwald along a road that actually runs above the village. One thing immediately stood out to us: you do not see very much along the way. There is no wide view over the village and no spectacular first sight of the lake. You only really enter Iseltwald after turning off the main road.
You are then guided almost directly towards the car park. There is a kind of partial road closure, making it clear that you are not supposed to simply drive into the village itself, but should park immediately.
The car park is not very large. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and were lucky to find a space. It was already quite busy. Coaches even park further away, which immediately shows that this village was never really designed for such large numbers of tourists.
Parking cost us around 1 CHF per hour and we could simply pay by bank card. It was organised clearly, but I would not arrive too late in the day if you want to be sure of finding a space.
The first view: Lake Brienz, mountains and a busy pier
From the car park, you can walk down into the village quite easily. The walk downhill is relaxed, although you will feel the climb in your legs on the way back up. Once you reach the bottom, you immediately see beautiful Lake Brienz and the surrounding mountains.
And almost immediately, the pier also catches your attention.
There is almost always a group of people taking photos there. If you do not know the series, it feels slightly random that this particular spot is so popular. It is certainly a beautiful place. But without the context, you will probably wonder why everyone is standing in a queue.
Why is Iseltwald so famous?
Iseltwald is mainly known because of the Korean Netflix series Crash Landing on You. In a famous scene, the female main character sits on the pier while looking out across the lake. The scene became popular around the world, especially among fans of Korean dramas.
And you notice that immediately here. Many visitors come specifically for that one photo on that particular pier. It has now become so popular that you have to pay to enter the pier. Expect to pay around 5 CHF.
That price may feel slightly strange for a pier, but in a way, it is understandable. Iseltwald is small and receives far more visitors because of that one scene than the village can easily handle. Additional toilets, rubbish collection, staff and maintenance also have to be paid for somehow.
But it is not only about the pier
One thing we found interesting was that most visits do not end at the pier. Yes, many people come for this one spot. But afterwards, they often continue walking through the village.
Another well-known place is Seeburg Castle. This small castle has a beautiful location beside the water and also appears frequently on social media. You get a particularly attractive view of the castle from the other side of the village, with Lake Brienz in front of it.
This creates a kind of standard route: first take a photo on the pier and then walk to the other side for the small castle. And honestly, that view really is beautiful, especially in clear weather with the blue water in front of it.
Tourism that has changed the village
While walking around, we particularly noticed how clearly tourism has affected the village. At one restaurant, we saw a sign that said: “We are a restaurant, not a photo spot.”
That says enough.
At times, it feels as though people quickly arrive to take a photo and then leave again. They seem less interested in the village itself and more interested in creating the image they already had in mind. This makes Iseltwald feel slightly complicated.
On the one hand, you can understand the hype. Its location beside Lake Brienz is beautiful. On the other hand, the crowds take away some of the peace you would normally expect in a small Swiss village.

Our moment at Lake Lodge Iseltwald
In the end, we approached our visit slightly differently. Instead of only walking around to take photos, we continued to the other side of the village. This brought us to Lake Lodge Iseltwald.
It turned out to be a really pleasant spot. We had a drink there with views of the lake and Seeburg Castle. Our daughter was comfortable in her pushchair, we sat quietly for a while and that was exactly what made the visit enjoyable for us.
This was actually the moment when Iseltwald worked for us. Not as a quick photo spot, but as a place to sit for a while, look across the water and allow the crowds to pass by in the background.
Is there much else to do in Iseltwald?
Not really. Iseltwald is small and mainly consists of a few hotels, some restaurants and cafés, beautiful views and, of course, the famous pier. Do not expect a large village with shops, museums or lots of activities.
You can enjoy a walk along the water and admire the views of Lake Brienz. That is perfectly fine for a short stop. However, I would not allow half a day for the village unless you plan to have lunch, go swimming or arrive by boat.
Think of Iseltwald as a short stop beside Lake Brienz, rather than a major destination for the day.
Combining Iseltwald with other places
Iseltwald is conveniently located for a route around Lake Brienz. You can easily combine it with Interlaken, Brienz or Giessbach Falls. You can also easily include Iseltwald when driving from Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald towards Lake Brienz.
We would mainly combine Iseltwald with another destination. We would be less likely to make a special detour just for the village, unless you are a fan of Crash Landing on You or really want to take the famous photo.

Staying in Iseltwald or Interlaken
You can stay in a beautiful location in Iseltwald itself. You are directly beside Lake Brienz, in a small village with mountain views. However, the choice is limited and popular, so book early if you really want to stay here.
We chose Goldswil, close to Interlaken. We stayed at Kiwi Chalet – Mountain Views & Cozy NZ Vibes. It was a pleasant and original place to stay, with mountain views and a cosy atmosphere. It is also convenient if you are travelling onwards or want to combine several places around Interlaken.
Would you prefer to stay directly beside the lake? You can search for hotels and apartments in Iseltwald itself. If you want a wider choice of restaurants, shops and transport connections, Interlaken is more practical.

Iseltwald: a beautiful village with a clear hype
Iseltwald is a place that became world-famous because of a single scene. This makes it special, but also slightly complicated. The village has a beautiful location, Lake Brienz is impressive and Seeburg Castle gives the village some extra atmosphere.
But you also notice that the hype is considerable. If you are visiting for the pier or are a fan of Crash Landing on You, it is certainly enjoyable to stop here. If you mainly want a quiet, authentic village without crowds, there are other places to visit in the region. You will also avoid a busy car park.
For us, Iseltwald became most enjoyable during our time at Lake Lodge: having a drink beside the water, looking towards the small castle and sitting down for a while after a day on the road. When you approach it like that, Iseltwald is simply a pleasant short stop beside Lake Brienz.
