We have fully plotted the route of the Peaks of the Balkan Trail for you in a GPX file. Please note: if you choose a different guesthouse, your final kilometre(s) may vary slightly. There are many organised trips available online, and they often make the routes easier by picking you up with minibuses from, for example, a guesthouse. Not very adventurous in our opinion, and believe me, this route is absolutely doable!

A GPX file is a standard file format for storing GPS data such as routes, tracks and waypoints. To open a GPX file, there are several methods depending on what you want to do with it. If you want to use the GPX file for navigation or to follow a route, you can use a GPS device such as a handheld GPS or a smartphone with navigation software like Garmin, Google Maps, or another navigation program that supports GPX. You can usually import the GPX file into the app or software and then follow the route. We have created an 8-day hiking programme with GPX files that you can use right away.
I personally am a huge fan of GPX Viewer 2. This app is completely free for iPhone. The steps you need to take to get the Peaks of the Balkan Trail GPX working on your phone are as follows:
- Download the “GPX files Peaks of the Balkan Trail”. You will receive our helpful travel guide with all the information included.
- Then install a GPX viewer on your phone. As mentioned, I am a big fan of GPX Viewer 2 for iPhone. This app is completely free to use and is the one I used during my trek.
- Save the GPX files for the Peaks of the Balkan Trail on your phone. You can then import the files into the app. In GPX Viewer 2 you do this by tapping the file icon in the top left corner. Then, with the + icon in the top right corner, you can select the files to import.
