There are many organised trips available online, and they often make the routes easier by picking you up with minibuses from, for example, a guesthouse. But believe me, there are so incredibly many guesthouses to be found that it is absolutely possible to do this entire hike completely on your own. In fact, we have selected the most beautiful places to stay so you don’t have to worry about that.

From Podgorica to Plav
Depending on your flight and whether you are travelling alone or with others, you can always take a taxi from the airport (the average cost is around 25 euros per person if the taxi is filled with 4 people). This ride takes about 2 hours if your taxi driver travels through Albania and is a bit sporty. For 15 euros you can also take the bus from Podgorica airport to Plav, although this will easily take you around 4.5 hours. For us, Plav was the starting point for the Balkan Trail without a guide.
Hotels, Hostels and Apartments in Plav
Plav, located in the northeast of Montenegro, is a town with a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural surroundings. Surrounded by the Prokletije Mountains and Lake Plav, the town attracts mainly nature lovers. The old town is characterised by traditional architecture and a diverse population consisting of Bosniaks, Albanians and Montenegrins. Plav offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy walks through the historic streets, boat trips on the lake, and local dishes in the town’s restaurants.
We stayed in Plav both on the way out and on the return journey, since the route is essentially a loop.
Guesthouse in Plav

Super cosy little house with a balcony and a view over the beautiful garden. Fully equipped kitchenette and recently renovated bathroom with a wonderful rain shower! The sleeping loft is very spacious. You won’t miss a thing here! A beautiful starting point for the Peaks of the Balkan. Very convenient location, within walking distance of the supermarket to stock up before starting your hike.

Samel’s Cottage Hrid’s Lake Prokletije
Our stopover in Plav during our trek along the Peaks of the Balkans route was a pleasant experience. The accommodation offered a beautiful view of the surroundings, especially at sunset, and the starry sky was impressive. The sleeping cabins were comfortable and clean, and the family who welcomed us was friendly and helpful. A hike to the nearby Hridsko jezero was well worth it, although the weather wasn’t completely in our favour. We chose this location for our final overnight stay on the route before descending back into the valley.
