France is known for its picturesque towns that are steeped in history, culture and beauty. One of these enchanting little gems is the charming town of Beaune, located in the Burgundy region. With its picturesque streets, historical architecture and world-famous wine production, Beaune is a destination that will captivate every traveler.
Beaune is about 7 hours drive from The Netherlands (my country) and is therefore the ideal stop on the Route du Soleil. Whether you are driving by car to the south of Europe or on the way back to the Netherlands. It is a small quiet town where you can enjoy history and beautiful wines from Burgundy.

Beaune
With a population of about 20,000 people, Beaune retains an intimate and cozy ambiance, which adds to its appeal for both local residents and tourists.
The town has a deep-rooted history that dates back to Roman times, and this heritage is still visible in the architecture and layout of the town. Beaune was once an important trading post and is still a center of commercial activity due to its prominent position in the Burgundy wine industry. On the map below you can see the center of Beaune, as mentioned, quite small in size. From north to south and from west to east you can walk in less than 15 minutes. At the bottom of the map I have listed some highlights that are worth visiting.

Beaune’s Walled City Center
Walk through the cobblestone streets of Beaune and let yourself be carried away by the medieval atmosphere. The city walls and towers remind of a rich past of defense and prosperity. Don’t forget to admire the old gates, such as the Porte Saint-Nicolas and the Porte Marie de Bourgogne, as you wander through the town. The abundance of charming boutiques, cafes and restaurants adds even more character to the atmosphere.
Beaune Market
To truly experience the local atmosphere and flavors of Beaune, you must visit the market. Every Saturday morning the marketplace comes to life with colorful stalls full of fresh produce, regional delicacies and artisanal goods. It is the perfect opportunity to connect with the local population and take some authentic souvenirs home.
Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu)
If you want to visit a place, then go to the Hospices de Beaune. One of the most iconic and distinctive sights of Beaune is the Hospices de Beaune, also known as Hôtel-Dieu. This magnificent building, originally founded in the 15th century, now serves as a museum and offers insight into the history of healthcare and philanthropy in the region. The striking architecture, colorful roofs and wooden facades are extraordinarily beautiful. Don’t forget to admire the Salle des Pôvres, an impressive hall where the sick used to be cared for.

Basilique Notre-Dame
The imposing Basilique Notre-Dame is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and an important religious and historical monument in Beaune. The beautiful stained glass windows, detailed sculptures and majestic tower make it a breathtaking sight. The interior of the basilica is just as impressive as the exterior, with its vaulted ceilings and serene atmosphere.

Wine Tasting
A trip to Beaune would not be complete without discovering the wine experience of the region. The town is located in the heart of the famous Burgundian wine region and is known for its excellent wines. Visit one of the many wine cellars and wineries in the town and surroundings to taste the delicious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for which the region is so famous. I recommend taking the car for this to the village just ten minutes away Savigny-lès-Beaune. Here you will find some fantastic wineries such as Henri de Villamont and Philip Girard. You can always drop by these wineries and taste, the unwritten rule is that after a free tasting you purchase a few bottles.
