Múlafossur Waterfall: the easiest must-see on Vágar

Múlafossur Waterfall may well be one of the easiest must-sees in the Faroe Islands. You park your car, walk for a few minutes and suddenly find yourself at one of the most famous viewpoints on Vágar: a waterfall that drops from a green cliff straight into the Atlantic Ocean.

We visited Múlafossur immediately on our first day in the Faroe Islands. After two flights, a baby who had very little interest in sleeping during the second flight and a smooth arrival at the airport, we got into our rental car and drove almost straight to Gásadalur.

The weather was not entirely cooperating yet. Rain, wind, suitcases full of waterproof clothing that was not conveniently within reach… exactly how you might imagine your first hour in the Faroe Islands. But even in grey weather, Múlafossur is a beautiful first stop.

What is Múlafossur Waterfall famous for?

Múlafossur is a waterfall near the village of Gásadalur, on the island of Vágar. What makes it special is that the waterfall does not flow into a river or valley, but drops directly from the cliff into the ocean. This makes it one of the most photographed places in the Faroe Islands.

You may already recognise the view: a small village between the mountains, green cliffs, the sea below and the waterfall right on the edge. It almost looks too perfect to be real, but it genuinely is.

The great thing about Múlafossur is that it requires hardly any effort. From the car park, it takes around 2 minutes to walk to the viewpoint.

Parking at Múlafossur

Parking at Múlafossur is easy. You drive to Gásadalur and park in the car park just before the village. From there, it is only around 300 metres to the viewpoint. The waterfall is free to visit.

That makes Múlafossur a fun and quick stop. You do not need hiking boots, you do not need to buy a ticket and you do not need to keep an entire afternoon free. Simply park, walk a short distance, enjoy the view and continue your journey.

That is exactly why I would not skip it. Yes, it is a famous place. And yes, you probably will not spend hours here. But when something is this easy to reach and sits in such a beautiful location, you simply have to take a look.

Múlafossur is located near Gásadalur, a small village at the end of the road. In the past, this village was much more difficult to reach, but these days you can drive straight there through a tunnel. As a result, the waterfall is much easier to visit than it used to be.

Our first stop in the Faroe Islands

We arrived in the Faroe Islands from Copenhagen that day. The first flight went fairly smoothly with Celine, our 8-month-old daughter. During the second flight, however, she decided that sleeping was unnecessary. She mainly wanted attention, an extra bottle and the occasional opportunity to check whether the seat in front of her was securely attached. Mum and Dad were tired, so let’s just say it was an intense flight.

Fortunately, both flights departed on time. That does not always happen either. Once we landed, everything went surprisingly smoothly: collecting our luggage, arranging the rental car and setting off. Only the weather had not quite realised that we had just started our holiday.

At Múlafossur, we immediately needed our waterproof clothing. The problem was that it was still buried somewhere in our suitcases. So a little later, we found ourselves opening the boot inside a tunnel and repacking everything. Not particularly romantic, but practical. And it was immediately a useful lesson for the rest of the trip: in the Faroe Islands, you want your waterproof clothing within reach, not at the bottom of your bag.

Despite the rain, the view was beautiful. Perhaps the weather actually made it feel even more Faroese. Green cliffs, low-hanging clouds, wind, water and that waterfall continuing to drop into the sea as though nothing could disturb it. You do not come here for perfectly clear blue skies. You come here for rugged nature.

Combine Múlafossur with Bøur

On the way to Gásadalur, you pass through Bøur. Or, as we now remember it: the only place name that a cow can pronounce. Moo-r. Silly, but you will never forget it again.

Bøur is a small village with beautiful views towards Tindhólmur and Drangarnir. When you are on Vágar, it makes sense to stop here for a moment. You do not have to turn it into an extensive activity, but it is a nice place for a short photography stop.

Apparently, the Danish king sometimes stays here when he visits the Faroe Islands.

Seeing Skarðsáfossur from the sea

A fun detail: we later also saw Skarðsáfossur, which is located just before Múlafossur, from the sea during our Drangarnir boat tour from Sørvágur. This gives you a completely different perspective, even though the idea behind the waterfall is similar.

If you have enough time on Vágar, I would definitely recommend this combination. First view Múlafossur from land and then, on another day or later on the same day, see the coastline from the water. Read about our experience with the Drangarnir boat tour in the Faroe Islands here.

Combine it with Sørvágsvatn and Trælanípa

Múlafossur is also easy to combine in one day with the famous hike to Sørvágsvatn and Trælanípa. This is the walk to the viewpoint where it looks as though a lake is hanging above the ocean.

We visited Sørvágsvatn and Trælanípa on the same day as the Drangarnir boat tour. But if your plans work out differently, you can also easily combine Múlafossur, Bøur and Sørvágsvatn during one day on Vágar. That gives you a short stop, a village and a hike all in one day.

If you are visiting Sørvágsvatn, keep in mind that it requires more time and money. Múlafossur is free and quick to visit. The hike to Trælanípa takes longer and you pay an entrance fee because the route crosses private land.

Staying overnight on Vágar

We stayed in a boathouse nearby. And honestly, that suits Vágar perfectly. You are close to the airport, Múlafossur, Bøur, Sørvágsvatn and Sørvágur, but you immediately get that peaceful island feeling.

If you want to explore this side of the Faroe Islands at a relaxed pace, staying overnight on Vágar is very convenient. You do not have to keep driving back and forth from Tórshavn and can adapt your plans to the weather more easily. Here, that is not a luxury, but almost a necessity.

View accommodation here on Vágar around Sørvágur, Bøur and Múlafossur. Would you rather stay somewhere central for several days in the Faroe Islands? Then Tórshavn is more practical, although you will have to drive a fair distance each time you want to visit Vágar.

Múlafossur Waterfall is easy to include in your travel plans!

Not because you will spend hours here or because it is an adventurous hike, but precisely because it is so easy to reach and so beautiful.

From the car park, you can walk to one of the most famous viewpoints in the Faroe Islands in just a few minutes. Free, quick and impressive. That makes Múlafossur a great first or final stop on Vágar when you are near the airport.

For us, it was our first proper introduction to the Faroe Islands: pulling waterproof jackets out of the suitcase, sheep on the road, green cliffs and a waterfall dropping straight into the ocean. It is difficult to imagine a better way to begin.
