Discover Jökulsárlón – the Enchanting Glacier Lagoon in Iceland

Ontdek Jökulsárlón - gletsjermeer in IJsland

Have you ever heard of Jökulsárlón? This is a breathtaking glacier lagoon in Iceland. The pronunciation might be a bit tricky, but this lagoon is very well-known among tourists. Almost nowhere else can you get this close to a glacier lagoon in Iceland as at Jökulsárlón. This enchanting landscape, filled with icebergs and surrounded by majestic mountains, is an absolute highlight of a trip to Iceland. Additional advantage: you find Jökulsárlón along route 1!

The Enchanting Beauty of Jökulsárlón

An Encounter with Glacier Ice

Jökulsárlón is a natural glacier lagoon that has been formed by the melting ice masses of the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest ice cap in Europe. It is located in the southeast of Iceland, near Skaftafell National Park. Upon arrival, you will be enchanted by the sight of crystal-clear water, in which large and small icebergs float. This is a unique opportunity to admire and experience the glacier ice up close. Do keep in mind that more tourists know about this. It can therefore be quite busy at the foot of this glacier lagoon.

The Colorful Splendor of Jökulsárlón

What makes Jökulsárlón even more spectacular are the vibrant colors that the lagoon has to offer. The icebergs range from clear white to radiant blue, depending on the light incidence and the reflection of the sun. Also, this is a unique spot: the ice blocks float from here to the sea. You can therefore get very close, without having to go on the boat for that. Although that is a really fun experience.

To be honest, I have to say: in sunny weather, it is even more impressive. I encountered a cloudy day as you can see in the photo above.

Birds and Seals

Jökulsárlón attracts not only nature lovers and photographers because of its icebergs. It is also home to a variety of birds, such as puffins, swans, and various types of gulls. In addition, you might be lucky and spot seals enjoying the peace and cool water of the lagoon. For that, you need to book a boat tour.

Note: puffins are generally only spotted in May, June, and July during the breeding season.

One of the most popular activities at Jökulsárlón is a boat tour over the glacier lagoon. During this tour, you get super close to the foot of the glacier. The sound of cracking ice and spotting seals in the area provide an unforgettable experience. You go out on the water in a kind of speedboat. Make sure to dress warmly for this tour.

Extra tip: reserve your spot on a boat. Especially in high season, it can be very busy. If you arrive in the middle of the day, you might have to wait a long time.

Walk on diamond beach Iceland

Walking on the Diamond Beach

The Diamond Beach, located at the mouth of Jökulsárlón, is an absolute gem that you must not miss. The beach owes its name to the beautiful ice diamonds that lie on the black sand. These ice pieces come from the glacier and are brought to the beach by the waves. Take a walk along the coastline and see it for yourself!

Under the blue ice cave in Iceland

Go Under the Glacier: Discover the Blue Ice Cave

Do you want to experience something really unique? Book a tour from Jökulsárlón to go under a glacier. See it as an ice cave XXL. You won’t believe your eyes. I found this the most beautiful experience of my trip through Iceland. Do keep in mind that the trip is quite pricey and you will easily spend 3 hours on it. You are taken there in special vehicles like the one in the photo below.

Blue cave Iceland - transport

Good to know: glaciers are a natural phenomenon that unfortunately suffer a lot from climate change. The ice caves are not accessible all year round. It may also be that they will no longer be accessible next year.

Jökulsárlón: a Must-See on Your Iceland Road Trip

Jökulsárlón is an absolute wonder of nature that enchants you with its enchanting beauty. This glacier lagoon in Iceland offers a unique experience to behold. The sad thing is also that due to climate change, this lagoon may no longer be a tourist attraction in a few decades. The glaciers are retreating further each year. Where the glacier is this year, there will probably be water or rock next year.
