Start of the Hike – Jebel Shams Balcony Walk – W6
The Jebel Shams Balcony Walk is a challenging but rewarding hike that takes you along the edge of the impressive Jebel Shams gorge – also known as “Oman’s Grand Canyon.” The W-6 trail starts in the village of Al Khitaym and winds along steep cliffs.
You start in the village of Al Khitaym, pass some small houses/huts heading toward the gorge, and right at the beginning you see a marker (in yellow-white-red). Village residents with goats often stand there, showing you the way or selling goods. Here the hike begins, where you turn left onto the path. The trail is officially recognized by the ministry as an official hiking trail. Every few meters you’ll find colorful markers, but the path is so clear that getting lost is almost impossible. The markers are also clearly visible on the way back.

Total Length of the Jebel Shams Balcony Walk
The total length of the Balcony Walk is about 8 kilometers (round trip). Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the gorge, with deep abysses and steep rock faces stretching out before you. The landscape is truly spectacular and offers great photo opportunities. In total, you’ll be out for about 2 hours, if you take more breaks and go at a leisurely pace, plan for a maximum of 3 hours.

Best Time for the Jebel Shams Balcony Walk
We were traveling in Oman ourselves in mid-October. This meant the temperatures were significantly lower than in summer, when they can easily reach 40–50 degrees. During the Jebel Shams hike, there’s little shade. Therefore, pay attention to appropriate clothing and best start the hike early in the morning when it’s still cooler. We found the hike relatively strenuous, especially because of the ascent on the way back and the intense sun.

The hike is of medium to high difficulty, so you should be in good condition and wear sturdy hiking shoes. The path is partially narrow and uneven, and there are some steep sections where caution is advised. Along the way, you’ll pass some small traditional mountain houses. That’s where the hike ends, and you can return the same way.
Camping Near Jebel Shams
Oman is naturally the perfect country for camping – you can wonderfully pitch your tent at Jebel Shams too. Keep in mind that it can get very cold at this altitude at night and you’ll often have company from goats. With a 4×4 you can drive right to the edge of the gorge and enjoy spectacular sunsets, where the mountains create a fascinating play of shadows. We parked our 4×4 car at this position.

More Luxury?
In the area there are also luxurious resorts like the hotel The View. Want to dine on a royal level? Then visit the viewpoint “Diana’s Point,” named after Princess Diana who was once a guest here. From here you have a fantastic panoramic view over the gorge and the surrounding mountains.
