Most people have already turned back by then.
Follow the walking trail that starts at Seljalandsfoss. As you follow the path, you will notice that it leads you into a narrow gorge, surrounded by high cliffs. It almost feels as if you have found a secret passage. And there, at the end of the gorge, you will see the Gljufrabui waterfall, tucked away behind a wall of rock. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes, as the path can sometimes be muddy.

Look it up on Google Maps as well and you will clearly see how close it is.

It really is a spectacular sight. The water plunges down with force, surrounded by lush green moss. You can hear the sound of the falling water and feel the mist splashing on your face. It is an experience that truly stimulates your senses.

Also visit the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall
This waterfall in South Iceland not only has an impressive height of 60 metres, but is also special because you can walk all the way around it. This allows you to view the waterfall “from behind the scenes” and enjoy the enchanting view through the curtain of water.
The Seljalandsfoss waterfall is bigger than Gljufrabui. You will therefore encounter a lot more tourists here. Simply because it is easier to access and, of course, also incredibly beautiful. Together these waterfalls are among the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland, and all within walking distance of each other!
Extra tips for your visit to Gljufrabui
Best time to visit Gljufrabui
The waterfall is accessible all year round, but spring and summer (May to August) are the most beautiful times to visit: the moss is an intense green and the waterfall has a powerful flow. Visit early in the morning or later in the day to avoid the crowds – you will also have the best light for photos.
Parking at Gljufrabui
Gljufrabui is very easy to reach with your rental car or campervan. The best way to visit is to combine it with the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. There is also an official parking area (Google Maps) here. Note: parking here is paid. It costs 700 ISK, which is roughly 5 euros per day. The waterfall is located 128 kilometres from Reykjavik.
What does Gljúfrabúi actually mean?
The name Gljúfrabúi literally means “dweller of the gorge” in Icelandic – how cool is that? You really feel as if you are discovering a secret world when you step into the gorge. According to some stories a friendly troll lives in the gorge, but we will just keep that as folklore 😉
Is Gljufrabui suitable for everyone?
Although the walk only takes about 10 minutes, you do have to scramble over some wet stones. For small children, elderly people or anyone with limited mobility, it can be challenging. A waterproof jacket and good hiking boots are definitely not a luxury here.
