Hike naar de Bruarfoss waterval - Alles wat je moet weten

Looking for an unforgettable hiking experience in Iceland’s breathtaking nature? Then a hike to Bruarfoss is a must. This beautiful waterfall in the Golden Circle is known for its distinctive blue color and is a popular destination for hikers. The waterfall is one of the lesser known waterfalls in the country, but that is exactly what makes it so special. Bruarfoss is known for its crystal-clear blue water and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. You just have to hike there first.

Where is Bruarfoss located?

Bruarfoss is located in southwest Iceland, close to the Golden Circle route. To reach the waterfall, you need to take a short hike through a beautiful landscape. The remote location of Bruarfoss contributes to the pristine beauty of the area, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and hikers.

Bruarfoss is known for its striking blue color caused by the melted water flowing through the lava fields. The contrast between the blue water and the surrounding nature is truly enchanting and makes for beautiful photos.

How long does the hike to Bruarfoss take?

The hiking route to Bruarfoss starts at a parking lot by the Bruara river. Parking is free and there is space for about 20 cars. From there, follow the marked hiking trails through the beautiful landscape. At the beginning of the route it’s not that exciting yet, but it quickly becomes more beautiful.

The hike takes about 1.5-2 hours, depending on pace and conditions. In total you walk 6.6km (round trip). Along the way you have to cross a small river. So be prepared that your shoes will get wet.

Midfoss waterfall on the way to Bruarfoss hike

On the way to Bruarfoss you encounter 2 waterfalls

Along the hiking path to the Brúarfoss waterfall you come across two other waterfalls. Halfway along the path is the Hlauptungfoss waterfall, a small but enchanting waterfall where the sparkling blue water flows down a few meters between the brown rocks. After a few minutes of walking you reach the second waterfall, the Midfoss waterfall, where the water trickles down in small steps. They are ideal stops to take a break during your hike and enjoy these powerful little waterfalls.

From the Midfoss waterfall it’s not far to Brúarfoss, but before you get there you still have to make a steep climb. Once you arrive at Brúarfoss, you can walk across a bridge over the river. From the bridge you have a perfect view of the waterfall and you can take beautiful photos.

Short route to Bruarfoss

There is also a parking lot close to Bruarfoss. This path is unpaved. Personally I did the hike, so I can’t speak from experience about this route. Do you have less time and a suitable rental car? Then this can be a nice alternative to the hike.

Watch the weather conditions Bruarfoss hike

Watch the weather conditions!

The weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, so keep an eye on the weather conditions. Especially if you want to do this hike, because you walk over an unpaved road towards the waterfall. When it has rained a lot, there is a lot of mud (see my photo below, this was about 300 meters from the route). Furthermore you walk along the river on a relatively hard surface.

Has it been raining for days? Then this hike might not be recommended. Fortunately you are in the Golden Circle where there is still plenty to see!
