Deep in the northeast of Bali, far away from the busy beaches and tourist hotspots, lies the mountain village of Kintamani. This village is especially popular because it offers stunning views of the famous Mount Batur volcano and the lake attached to it: Lake Batur. Kintamani offers a totally different Bali experience to the rest of the island. I’ll take you along all the highlights in the northeast of Bali. If you are looking for quiet highlights in Bali, then this area definitely deserves a spot in your itinerary.

6x things to do from Kintamani

1. Mount Batur sunrise hike
Probably the reason why 90% of tourists stay overnight in Kintamani: the Mount Batur hike. The hiking experience starts quite early – around 3 a.m. Together with a local guide, you hike up for about two hours. This is usually done in small groups. We also hiked up with a guide and did it together with another couple. You walk in a little train of tourists and guides up the mountain. A bit touristy, but if you love hiking, it’s still one you’ll want to tick off.

Once at the top, you’re rewarded with a spectacular view over the island, while the sun colours the sky in warm orange and red tones. Don’t forget to bring some cash for a warm breakfast and hot chocolate at the top! In most tours, this breakfast is included.
Bonus tip: bring a warm, dry jumper or blanket for the summit. You’ll arrive sweaty and then suddenly stand still. You cool down quite a lot then. For two hours I wondered why I had a jumper in my bag. At the top I was extremely happy with it.
2. Sukawana Sunrise Spot – alternative to the Mount Batur hike
This viewpoint is perfect for those who don’t want to hike. On clear days you can not only see Mount Batur, but also Mount Agung and even Mount Rinjani on the neighbouring island of Lombok. It’s a quiet alternative to the crowded volcano hike. You do need to arrange transport from Kintamani to get here. Check the location on Google Maps.
3. The volcanic moon landscape
Unfortunately, we didn’t have time for this ourselves. But one of the most unique sights is the black lava field, created by an eruption in 1968. You can actually see this area from one of the many cafés in Kintamani. You can explore this otherworldly landscape in several ways:
- By 4×4 jeep through the rugged terrain
- On a quad bike for extra adventure
- On foot, for the best photo opportunities

4. Pura Ulun Danu Batur temple
Pura Ulun Danu Batur is not just any temple. It is a sanctuary for Dewi Danu, the goddess of water. And water is super important in Bali! Local people come here to pray and bring small offerings. They thank Dewi Danu for the water that keeps their rice fields fertile. The Batur temple is one of the most important temples in Kintamani, Bali, and attracts visitors who want to learn more about Balinese culture and spirituality. Another nice bonus: you have a great view of Mount Batur from the temple. The name probably has something to do with that… 😉
Pura Ulun Danu Batur is a sacred site with 9 Hindu temples, 285 shrines and several pavilions. You can easily spend an hour here.
I wrote a separate blog about this place. So feel free to read more about the Pura Ulun Danu Batur temple in Kintamani.
5. Natural hot springs
After an active day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in one of the natural hot springs. The mineral-rich water is naturally heated by underground magma. You have two main options:
- Toya Bungkah: the best-known hot springs, with entrance from 200,000 IDR
- Toya Devasya: a more luxurious complex with eight pools and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Entrance will cost you 300,000 IDR
It’s a smart idea to book ahead, especially in high season.

6. Dining or having drinks in Kintamani with a view of Mount Batur
Kintamani is a high-altitude village and has beautiful views of Mount Batur and the valley around it. You can imagine there are plenty of restaurants that take advantage of this and have built their terraces facing this direction. We spent quite some time at Ritatkala Cafe. The cakes tasted more than fine there!
These restaurants are also recommended in Kintamani:
- Paperhills: a three-storey café with infinity pool and comfortable lounge sofas
- Pahdi Specialty Coffee: the perfect stop for coffee lovers
- Montana del Cafe: known for its hammock hanging over the crater rim
The climate in Kintamani is just a bit different
If you know Bali from the warm coastal areas, you’ll be surprised by the pleasant climate in Kintamani. Due to its higher altitude in the mountains, it’s noticeably cooler here. During the day, temperatures range between 20 and 26 degrees – perfect for activities. But be prepared: as soon as the sun sets, it can cool down quite a bit, to around 16 degrees. So be sure to bring a warm jumper and long trousers, especially if you’re heading out early for sunrise or want to enjoy the starry sky in the evening.
Practical tips for Kintamani
Transport
From Ubud, you can reach Kintamani in about an hour; from the south (Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta), it takes around two hours. Renting a scooter gives you the most freedom, but a private driver is also a good option.
Many travellers combine a visit to Kintamani with a tour of other Bali highlights, such as a stop at the Batur temple, a drive through the volcanic landscape of Batur Kintamani or a visit to Lake Batur. That’s why two hours of driving time is quite relative in your travel planning if you visit several places around Kintamani.
Money
Bring enough cash – there are very few ATMs in the area. For the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark you pay an entrance fee of 50,000 IDR.

Where to stay in Kintamani
We treated ourselves to a bit of comfort at Pramana Zahill Kintamani. This is a larger hotel and includes a (simple) breakfast. You can relax by the pool and the dinner is perfectly fine. In the evening they light fire pits and there was a singer performing – very cosy.
