Fun places in the city
Discover Ponsonby, a vibrant neighborhood just 10 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. From the hills of Ponsonby, you have a beautiful view over downtown Auckland. The green and hilly neighborhood is known for its cozy coffee shops, bars, restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries with local artworks. Enjoy the authentic wooden houses made from kauri trees, which are so typical of New Zealand. Explore the atmospheric alleys with colorful street art. In the evening, you can enjoy live music or go out in one of the bustling discotheques.
Also discover Waitemata Harbour, the breathtaking harbor offers a spectacular view of the city. Enjoy the lively atmosphere as you walk along the coastline or relax on one of the many beaches. Waitemata Harbour also offers countless recreational opportunities, such as sailing, kayaking, and fishing. Explore the iconic sights, including the famous Sky Tower and the bustling Viaduct Basin. The Sky Tower is an iconic symbol of Auckland. At a height of 328 meters, it is the tallest tower in the southern hemisphere. Visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view over the city and the surrounding islands. For the adventurous types, there’s even the opportunity to bungee jump from the tower!
North Shore is a city district that is especially known for its beaches, cafes, trendy shops, and a number of beautiful parks. From Waitemata Harbour, you can take a boat to this part of the city.
The Auckland Domain is a beautiful city park in the heart of the city. It is Auckland’s oldest park and houses the Auckland War Memorial Museum, which offers a treasure trove of information about New Zealand’s history. The park is perfect for a relaxed walk or a picnic in nature.
Just off the coast of Auckland lies Waiheke Island, a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, vineyards, and art galleries. A day trip to Waiheke Island is a great way to enjoy the natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Waiheke Island is accessible by ferry from downtown Auckland. The crossing takes about 40 minutes and offers a beautiful view of the coastline. Book a ticket with a fast ferry via Get Your Guide.
The hike to the 196-meter-high summit of Mount Eden is an absolute must-do in Auckland. The hike offers a spectacular view of the bustling city center, the soon-to-be-discussed Rangitoto Island, and the diverse suburbs. Interestingly enough, Mount Eden is actually Auckland’s highest mountain and officially classified as a volcano. No worries, the chance of an eruption is negligible, as the last eruption took place tens of thousands of years ago. Nowadays, there are various hiking trails that lead you to the crater that was formed at that time. The grass-covered crater is a quiet and serene place, perfect for a relaxed walk and admiring the panoramic view over Auckland.

I personally found it really fun to explore Auckland by bike, just like in the Netherlands. And Auckland really has an amazingly good network of bike paths! A well-known bike path in the city is the award-winning “Pink Path”. I booked my bike tour via Get Your Guide.

Let’s go to the beach!
Auckland has hundreds of beaches, from white sandy beaches to rougher stretches where the waves are high and you can surf excellently. Below you’ll find a list of Auckland’s nicest beaches:
- Mission Bay: a cozy beach about 6 kilometers from the city (10 min drive). It’s a beach with a very long promenade with lots of restaurants and cafes. It’s also nice that you can park here for free. It’s really fun to rent a bike here and explore Mission Bay by bike. There is a more than 19 kilometer long bike path that winds around the bay and along the promenade.
- Takapuna Beach: a popular beach among locals with lots of water sports opportunities. The beach is 12 kilometers north of the city (15 min drive).
- Cheltenham Beach: a quiet beach with shallow water and views of Rangitoto Island. The beach is 16 kilometers north of the city (20 min drive).
- Long Bay Beach: a large beach with clear water and picnic facilities. The beach is 26 kilometers north of the city (30 min drive).
- Orewa Beach: a long beach with white sand and clear water. The beach is about 40 kilometers north of the city (40 min drive).
- Karekare Beach: a quiet beach surrounded by mountains and rainforest. The beach is about 40 kilometers west of the city (45 min drive).
- Piha Beach: one of Auckland’s most famous beaches with black sand beaches and high waves. The beach is 40 kilometers west of the city. I really thought this beach was awesome. The beach has black sand beaches and rolling surf, which gives it a unique appearance. You can really surf super well at Piha Beach. Due to the consistency in rips and currents that make the waves peel, you can take longer rides. The beach offers breathtaking views of the ocean and majestic cliffs covered with dense green subtropical forests. Finally, there are also hiking trails that lead to the rainforest and headlands with beautiful vistas. Walk under the ancient kauri trees, which were once threatened by logging. Really recommended!
