The Cango Caves: South Africa’s most impressive caverns near Oudtshoorn

Cango Caves - indrukwekkende grotten bij Oudsthoorn - Swartberg

The Cango Caves are among the most popular tourist attractions in South Africa, located near Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo region. These awe‑inspiring limestone caves were formed over millions of years by water erosion. Inside, you’ll find magnificent stalagmites and stalactites — with some chambers soaring as high as 40 meters!

What Makes the Cango Caves So Special?

The Cango Caves are exceptional for several reasons. Firstly, they are one of the largest and most extensive cave systems in the world. Extending roughly 24 kilometers, they contain a spectacular variety of rock formations — stalactites, stalagmites, columns, curtains, and draperies — all beautifully illuminated during tours. In fact, lights are turned on strategically as the guide leads the group, creating a near‑theatrical effect. It’s no wonder that more than 200,000 visitors explore the caves each year.

Secondly, the Cango Caves hold great archaeological significance. Fossils of prehistoric animals — including mammoths, rhinos, and hyenas — have been discovered here, along with ancient rock paintings and engravings dating back to prehistoric times.

Another bonus: if it’s hot outside, the Cango Caves offer a cool escape from the South African sun — quite literally!

How Much Does a Tour of the Cango Caves Cost?

Tour prices (subject to change) are as follows:

  • Standard Tour: R180 for adults, R120 for children aged 4–12 years, and free for children under 4.
  • Adventure Tour: R220 for adults, R150 for children aged 4–12 years, and free for children under 4.

Prices include entry and a guided tour with an experienced, certified guide.

You can purchase tickets online or directly at the ticket office near the cave entrance. We recommend booking in advance, especially during peak travel season, as tours can fill up quickly.

Heritage Tour (approx. 1 hour)

The Heritage Tour is the easier and shorter option, lasting about one hour. It offers a great introduction to the caves, their geology, and fascinating history.

  • Duration: 60 minutes
  • Departures: Hourly, from 09:00 to 16:00
  • Route: Van Zyl & Botha Halls
  • Fitness Level: Easy
  • Restrictions: None

Adventure Tour (approx. 1.5 hours)

The Adventure Tour is longer and more physical, lasting around 90 minutes. It takes you deeper into the caves to explore sections that are not accessible on the Heritage Tour. Expect some climbing, crouching, and squeezing through narrow passages — so wear comfortable shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dusty.

  • Duration: 90 minutes
  • Departures: Every half hour from 09:30 to 15:30
  • Route: Entire Cango 1 system
  • Fitness Level: Moderate
  • Restrictions: Not recommended for those with claustrophobia or back problems.

Wear Good Shoes

A quick piece of personal advice — make sure you wear proper shoes. It surprised me how many people turned up in flip‑flops! To reach the entrance and move through the cave, you’ll be walking uphill on uneven surfaces. It’s not suitable for visitors with mobility issues, and it’s definitely not something to attempt in sandals.

The Cango Caves are easily accessible by car, with a designated parking area at the visitor center. There’s a small café and souvenir shop on site — nothing exceptional, but handy after your tour. All in all, it’s a fantastic stop on your South Africa road trip!

Still planning your journey? The Cango Caves are located near the Swartberg Mountains, and don’t miss the beautiful Meiringspoort Waterfall just a short drive away.
