Meiringspoort Waterfall: A Hidden Gem of the Swartberg Mountains

The Meiringspoort Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Swartberg Mountains. It’s not spectacular because of the volume of water, but because of its picturesque setting — a truly charming corner of nature! It’s a must-see for anyone traveling through the Klein Karoo region. The waterfall lies within the Swartberg Pass, a stunning mountain range dividing the Klein Karoo from the Great Karoo.
The waterfall is about 60 meters high and impressively wide. Water cascades into a deep ravine surrounded by sheer, rocky cliffs. The scene is especially striking in spring and summer, when water flow is at its peak.

How to Get to the Meiringspoort Waterfall
The Meiringspoort Waterfall is 60 meters high and surrounded by steep cliffs and red sandstone walls, creating breathtaking views. The waterfall is located about 30 kilometers from Oudtshoorn. You can reach it by car, taxi, or organized tour. There’s a parking area right by the trailhead.
The short hike to the waterfall takes around 10 minutes and is suitable for all ages. The path is carved into the rocks, offering a scenic and moderately easy climb. There are some steeper sections, but nothing too difficult — just take your time and enjoy the views along the way.
At the end of the trail, you can get very close to the waterfall itself. You can climb the rocks to reach the edge of the pool at its base — just watch your footing, as the area can be slippery.
Best Time to Visit the Meiringspoort Waterfall
The best time to visit is during the South African spring and summer (roughly September to March), when there’s plenty of rainfall and water flow is strong. In winter, the waterfall can dry up completely. We visited at the end of summer, and as you can see from the photos, the flow was much lighter.
