Swartberg Pass, Klein Karoo & Great Karoo: What you can’t miss!

Ontdek de Swartbergpas, Kleine Karoo en Grote Karoo

The Swartberg Pass is one of the most impressive mountain passes in South Africa. It lies in the Klein Karoo, a stunning region in the Western Cape province. Stretching for about 24 kilometers, the pass offers breathtaking views of both the Klein Karoo and the Great Karoo. This historic pass was built between 1881 and 1888 and connects Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo with Prince Albert in the Great Karoo.

The Swartberg Pass is a popular tourist destination, accessible to cars, motorbikes, cyclists, and hikers. There are several viewpoints along the way where you can stop and admire the scenery. Note that the road is unpaved. Many locals actually avoid driving their own cars here due to the potential for damage on the gravel road.

Why You Should Visit the Swartberg Pass

The Swartberg Pass is truly a spectacular route. It’s a beautiful drive that winds dramatically through rocky terrain. Once you reach the top, the views are magnificent—and constantly changing as you ascend. From the summit, you can gaze out over both the Klein Karoo and the Great Karoo below.

Although it’s a popular destination, the pass is rarely crowded. You’ll have plenty of peace and quiet to take in the dramatic rock formations. Want to get out and walk a bit? No problem for us either! We joined a guided tour, stopping at the most scenic spots to stretch our legs before hopping back into the van.

Beyond the scenic beauty, the pass also has historical significance. It’s known as an engineering masterpiece by Thomas Bain, the renowned engineer who built more than twenty mountain passes across South Africa. Along the route, you can still see the original dry-stone walls constructed by hand by prisoners—adding a meaningful historical layer to your journey.

Visit the Swartberg Pass with The Swartberg Experience

I didn’t drive the Swartberg Pass myself but joined The Swartberg Experience instead. It’s a full-day tour that included a visit to Meiringspoort Waterfall, followed by the scenic Swartberg Pass drive led by our guide, Kobus!

The best part about this experience? You can hop out of the vehicle, walk through sections of the pass, and then rejoin the van when you’re ready. It’s the perfect mix of hiking and sightseeing—an ideal way to explore such a stunning landscape!

Tip: You can also book a 2.5‑hour tour via Kobus se Gat (more about that below).

Kobus se Gat

Food and Accommodation at Kobus se Gat

If you’re looking for a great place to stay, Kobus se Gat is a fantastic choice. We had dinner there after The Swartberg Experience, but you can also stay overnight. Thanks to its secluded location, you’ll enjoy a peaceful sunset, delicious food, and a clear, star‑filled night sky.

Another great reason to visit Kobus se Gat is the traditional South African cuisine—think potjiekos (slow‑cooked stew), braai meat, and freshly baked bread. During dinner, Kobus and his family share stories about the region, making the experience even more special. Highly recommended!

Kobus se Gat also offers 2.5‑hour Swartberg tours including a traditional lunch—absolutely worth it!

There are also many hotels and guesthouses in Oudtshoorn, so you’ll easily find something that fits your budget. A great option is the Kleinplaas Guest Farm in Oudtshoorn.
